Quilotoa Lake - Ecuador

QUILOTOA LOOP – Full Day

Quilotoa is a huge volcano that had a great eruption a couple of thousand years ago, and those explosions created the unique landscape that surrounds it.

Quilotoa is a huge volcano that had a great eruption a couple of thousand years ago, and those explosions created the unique landscape that surrounds it. The lagoon, formed at its caldera (large cauldron-like hollow), is really something unique because of its colour that changes according to the light. Get ready to be blown away!

To reach Quilotoa, we have to drive for around 3 hours, but fortunately, the spectacular landscape on the way makes it all the more worthwhile. We will visit a local indigenous market. The one we visit depends on the day of your tour as every market in every town has something unique and special to offer. You will definitely get to see something both unique and special!

After merging with the locals in the most important meeting point , the market, we continue on to Quilotoa. We will observe the very unique landscape of the Toachi Canyon, which it is said, was formed after the explosion of the Quilotoa volcano thousands of years ago.

Finally, we arrive at 3900 metres above sea level (12795 feet ASL), from where you can take some breathtaking pictures of the lagoon. From here you can choose to walk to the bottom of the caldera and then back up again (the hike down takes around 30 minutes and the hike up around 1 hour). You can also rent mules on the way up, but we strongly recommend against this as we are opposed to the use and abuse of any animals! This is, however, your choice.

On the way back to Quito, we stop briefly to visit a small community known for the family that started native art in the area. Tigua artwork is now produced by several families in the area, famous for its typical Andean landscapes, mythology and life in the indigenous communities.

Quilotoa Lagoon, the spectacular Andes mountains that surround it and indigenous communities.

  • Hotel pick-up
  • Visit a local market (market varies depending on the day)

Otavalo Street Art

OTAVALO INDIGENOUS MARKET – Full Day

This is the most important indigenous market in Ecuador and it has a centennial history of fair trade, community sense and pride.

This is the most important indigenous market in Ecuador and it has a centennial history of fair trade, community sense and pride.

The natural and biological richness of the city of Otavalo and its surroundings has made it possible for the establishment of one of the most important cultures of Ecuador and Latin America. The Otavalos, or Otavaleños, have lived for centuries close to the San Pablo Lake, where they have developed their artistic skills using the resources of their environment, learning the art of making handicrafts. The ‘Plaza de Ponchos’, the central square, is a meeting place of cultures, where handicrafts and products from different regions of the country are offered and which, for centuries, has been used for this purpose.

A tour for shopping lovers! We will have the chance to merge with the people and their culture by visiting the fruits and vegetable market to know the richness of products of this part of the world and, then, visit the handicrafts market where you can go crazy and shop till you drop!

On the way, we will visit the Quitsato Museum, an interesting site showing how an Ecuadorian scientist has developed a very easy and graphic explanation about the observations of our ancestors to find the exact middle of the world and how it was and still is related to the local culture and beliefs.

Otavalo indigenous market where you can shop till you drop, the spectacular San Pablo Lake and an outdoor museum showing you the exact middle of the world. And … try some yummy biscuits and cheese!

OTAVALO INDIGENOUS MARKET + CULTURAL MERGE – Full Day

To really understand the emblematic indigenous people of Otavalo, it is necessary to merge with their culture and environment. Let us walk with you!

One of the most popular visits to the northern highlands of Ecuador is the indigenous market in Otavalo, but to really understand this emblematic indigenous group, it is necessary to merge with their culture and environment. Let us walk with you!

Only two hours from Quito, Otavalo is one of the most successful indigenous towns, from a business perspective, in both Ecuador and South America in terms of economic development. This can be attributed to the Otavaleños’ admirable commerce skills, which have enabled their traditions and culture to be recognised not only in Ecuador but also in many other countries.

As our goal is to merge with the locals, firstly we have to know what to see, what to eat and what to listen to. The Otavalos’ skills are much more than the crafts and textiles that we see at the biggest indigenous market. Their lifestyle has a lot to do with their music, and their music is tied to the environment. The mountains and the wind are the perfect environment for the wind instruments that our people have used for centuries, creating beautiful, heartfelt melodies. We will visit a local family workshop of instruments and famous musicians.

For shopping lovers!!

The perfect place to have a delicious and relaxing lunch is in one of the very old haciendas in the region. What is now Ecuador, was in colonial times, divided into big pieces of land called ‘haciendas’ which have now have been turned into lodges or restaurants, but that still preserve parts of the original architecture.

Our last stop is to the volcanic lagoon that was formed inside the dormant caldera of the Cotacachi volcano, which creates a magical landscape adding ‘the cherry on top of the cake’ to your adventure!

This trip combines landscapes, food tasting, merging with the locals and history. Be prepared to ‘have it all’!

  • Hotel pick-up
  • Drive to Imbabura province
  • Guayllabamba town, Quitsato Sundial, Cayambe, Miralago view point, San Pablo Lake, Otavalo Indigenous Market and Ñanda Mañachi art & music centre

MINDO CLOUD FOREST – Full Day

The Mindo cloud forest is home to more than 400 bird species. There are also many different types of orchids, butterflies, mammals and amphibians, as the region is one of the most biodiverse places on earth.

The Mindo cloud forest is home to more than 400 bird species. There are also many different types of orchids, butterflies, mammals and amphibians, as the region is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. The cloud forest in the northeast of Ecuador is part of the Chocó Bioregion, a very humid area allowing for the development of plant life which can be seen growing everywhere!  On this trip, you will discover all of this!

Mindo is popular and well-known and is located only two hours from Quito. The Mindo cloud forest is an ecosystem characterised by the presence of fog or ‘clouds’ at the height of the tops of trees that generate abundant moisture and development of mosses and epiphytes, which allows a wide variety of animals and plants with a high level of endemism. In Ecuador, the conservation of these forests has attracted considerable interest from NGOs and governments, so activities such as ecotourism and bird watching in Mindo, in particular, is a great opportunity for local communities to preserve this richness.

Apart from the beautiful ecosystem and nature, you can also partake in a number of different activities including ecotourism, adventure sports and hiking. We will not be doing this today but you might want to come back!
